SOYBEAN MEAL

Soybean meal is the most important protein source used to feed farm animals and producing food protein. It represents two-thirds of the total world output of protein feedstuffs. Its feeding value is unsurpassed by any other plant protein source and it is the standard to which other protein sources are compared.

Soybean meal is the by-product of the extraction of soybean oil. Several processes exist, resulting in different products. Soybean meal is usually classified for marketing by its crude protein content. High-protein types are obtained from dehulled seeds and contain 47-49% protein and 3% crude fibre (as fed basis). Other types of soybean meal include the hulls or part of the hulls and contain less than 47% protein and more than 6% crude fibre. In solvent-extracted soybean meals, the oil content is typically lower than 2% while it exceeds 3% in mechanically-extracted meals

SUNFLOWER MEAL

Sunflower meal is the by-product of the extraction of oil from sunflower seeds. The sunflower meal, obtained after the oil is extracted from the seed, has a high protein percentage (28% for meal from hulled seeds to 42% for dehulled seed meals) and is used primarily in food rations for livestock and poultry.

A wide variety of products are available on the market, from low-quality straw-like meals to high-quality flours. Sunflower meals can be made from whole or decorticated seeds, and can be mechanically and/or solvent-extracted. The quality of sunflower meal depends on the plant characteristics, seed composition, hulls/kernel ratio, dehulling potential, growth and storage conditions and on the processing like dehulling, mechanical and/or solvent extraction.

While solvent-extracted sunflower meal remains the main type of sunflower meal commercially available, oil-rich sunflower meals obtained by mechanical pressure have become more popular these days, with the development of organic farming and on-farm oil production. RAPESEED MEAL

Rapeseed meal, also called canola meal in North America, Australia and some other countries, is the by-product of the extraction of oil from rapeseed. It is a protein-rich ingredient that is widely used to feed all classes of livestock. Worldwide production of rapeseed meal is second only to soybean meal.

The use of rapeseed meal as an animal feed was also limited by the presence of glucosinolates, which are antinutritional factors detrimental to animal performance. The emerge of low-erucic varieties and low-erucic, low-glucosinolate varieties, allowing rapeseed oil to become a major food oil, and rapeseed meal and rapeseeds to grow in importance as fed to livestock.

Rapeseeds contain 40-45% oil and yield about 55-60% oil meal when fully extracted by crushing followed by solvent extraction. Commercially there are two types of rape seed meal traded, Solvent-extracted rapeseed meal and Expeller or cold-extracted rapeseed meal. GUAR MEAL

Guar meal is the by-product of guar gum industry consisting of guar germ material. Guar meal contains 75-80% Total Digestible Nutrients and 50-65% Digestible Crude Protein. It is a good source of amino acids as it is richer in lysine, cysteine and glycine. It is also rich in trace minerals.

COTTON SEED MEAL

Cottonseed meal is the by-product of oil extraction from cotton seeds. As a protein-rich feed, cottonseed meal is a common source of protein for ruminants, notably in cotton-producing areas such as India, China and the USA, where it is used as a partial substitute for soybean meal.

Several methods are used to extract cottonseed oil like Mechanical extraction, Direct solvent extraction process, and Pre-press solvent extraction, resulting in different types of cottonseed meal (see figure). This situation is slightly different from that of other major oilseeds such as soybean and sunflower, where one process is usually dominant. As a result, there is a wide range of cottonseed meals differing in their protein, fibre and oil content.

GROUNDNUT MEAL

Peanut / groundnut meal is the by-product obtained after the extraction of oil from peanut seeds. It is a protein-rich ingredient that is widely used to feed all classes of livestock. Peanut meal is the sixth most common oil meal ingredient produced in the world after soybean meal, rapeseed meal, sunflower meal, cottonseed meal and palm kernel meal. Peanut meal is generally considered as an excellent feed ingredient due to its high protein content, low fibre, high oil (for expeller meal) and relative absence of antinutritional factors.

Peanut meal is produced by mechanical extraction only (expeller) or by mechanical followed by solvent extraction. It is also delivered in pellet form. Expeller meal consists of light gray to brownish pieces of variable size with a smooth, slightly curved surface. Solvent-extracted meal consists of light grey to brownish flakes of varying sizes.

DDGS is a by-product of the ethanol production process and has high nutrient feed value, suitable for the livestock industry. When ethanol plants produce ethanol, they use starch only from input grains like rice, corn, millets or wheat. After starch extraction, the byproduct contains – protein, fibre, oil and essential amino acids suitable for livestock feed called Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles.

The high energy, mid-protein, and high digestible phosphorus content of DDGS make it a very attractive, partial replacement for some of the more expensive feed sources. DDGS mostly used in Dairy Cattle Diets, Poultry Diets and Swine Diets.
